いよいよ春本番ですね．演習林ではツツジの植栽を行いました． 送電線わきの森林はストーム時の倒木によりライフラインに影響を及ぼす事例が最近の気象災害時に生じています．演習林内の道路わきのヒノキ林の中を送電線が通っています．この送電線を含む一帯の間伐を実施する年となりました． 今年は，送電線沿いの樹木をベルト状に伐採し 4 種のツツジ（シブカワツツジ、モチツツジ、ヤマツツジ、コバノミツバツツジ）を植栽しました．遺伝子攪乱にも配慮し，すべて静岡県西部の地域性苗です． ツツジを選定した理由は、 低木で将来にわたり送電線に被害を及ぼさないこと 乾燥土壌（乾性黄褐系褐色森林土）でありツツジの適地であること 花が楽しめるので，地元の人に楽しんでもらえそうなこと ツツジの仲間の分類の学習の場所となる ことです． 北向き斜面で日当たりは心配ですが，近くにも自生しているので大丈夫でしょう． 今年の花は難しいかもしれませんが，来年，地域の人の目を楽しませることができたらと思っています （水・矢） We cut down the trees along the power lines and planted four species of azaleas (Rhododendron sanctum var. lasiogynum, Rhododendron macrosepalum, Rhododendron obutsum var. kaempferi, Rhododendron reticulatum) in our forest. We chose azaleas because (1) they are shrubs that will not cause damage to the power lines in the future, (2) the soil is dry and suitable for azaleas, (3) local people can enjoy the beautiful flowers, and (4) it will be a place to learn about the classification of azalea species. 桜が咲いていました。ソメイヨシノとマメザクラを掛け合わせたもので、ほかの桜とともに事務所敷地内に植えられています。この桜はタグを止める針金を巻き込んだまま大きくなってしまい、そのためか針金より上の枝だけ早く咲くようになってしまいました。 （加, 2021/3/17） Cherry blossoms are starting to bloom. 2月22日に恒例の演習林見学会を開催しました． 例年ですと，山の講に引き続いての見学会及び懇談会そして宴の流れになるのですが，コロナ禍の現状ではそうもいかず，見学会だけの行事となりました． 当日は13名の方に参加いただきました．3月下旬並みの暖かさで，つい私の山での話もあちこちに脱線する見学会となりました．参加いただいた皆さん，多くの質問ありがとうございました． （水） On February 22, we held a tour for our experimental forest. In past years, we would have a lecture followed by a field trip and a banquet, but in this year we decided to have only the field trip because of the corona disaster. スギ・ヒノキの球果の害虫でもあり、多くの果樹の害虫でもあるチャバネアオカメムシ（Plautia stali）の標本を作りました。体長約 10 mm で口吻は約 5 mm といったところでしょうか。カメムシなんて見つければそっとしておくに限るし、口吻を見たことがありませんでしたが、予想外に長くて驚きました。この口で吸い、この羽根で飛び回っているのですね。結実の低下や果樹品質低下など、大発生により大きな被害を生むときもありますが、気持ちとしてはこの虫のように、フットワークよく飛び回り、いろんなことを吸収したいものです。面倒な方々もお断りです・・・（笑） （矢） I made specimens of stink bugs (Plautia stali), which is a pest of cedar and cypress cones and also a pest of many fruit trees. 12 月 25 日に，新潟大学の修士学生9人にリモートでの照葉樹の分類実習を行いました．事前に 30 種類の常緑広葉樹や暖温帯性の針葉樹の枝葉を宅配システムで送付し，実物を見せながらリモートで分類方法や生態的特徴を説明する方法です． 画面には生育地の幹の写真も見せながらの講義でした．新潟大学の学生にとっては日本海側の新潟の植生とは異なる太平洋側暖温帯の樹木たちについてサンプル枝葉を見ながら学ぶ時間となりました．午後には，その林の毎木データを用いてデータを解析しプレゼンテーションをする実習でした．時間が限られる中で全員悪戦苦闘していましたが，なんとか発表にこぎつけました． 実物の林を見るには遠く及びませんが，サンプルといえども実物を手にしながらのこうしたリモート実習は，コロナ禍での新たな実習の模索といえるでしょう．参加いただいた新潟大学生の皆さん，支援いただいた新潟大演習林教員の皆様に感謝申し上げます． （水） On December 25, we gave a remote training on the identification of trees in an evergreen forest to nine graduate students at Niigata University. We sent them 30 species of evergreen broad-leaved trees in advance and explained how to identify and ecological characteristics via Zoom. It was a great opportunity for the Niigata University students to learn about trees in the warm temperate zone along the Pacific Ocean, which is different from the vegetation in Niigata on the side of the Sea of Japan. 先週の金曜日、天竜ブランチで山開きの神事が行われました。天竜ブランチ・南アルプスブランチでの安全と地域の発展を地元の神主さんに祈願していただきました。事故なく安全に過ごすことができるよう、気を引き締めて野外での活動に取り組んでまいります。日頃の活動を支えてくださっている地域のみなさまへ改めて感謝申し上げます。 （栗）
