クリスマスも終わり年の瀬ですが、天竜ブランチでは 2 日間にわたって木質科学実習 (http://fc-forecol.agr.shizuoka.ac.jp/wordpress/?p=2478) が行われました。 森林観察や毎木調査を行ったり、ヒノキを間伐してはしごを作ったり薪割りをしたりしました。また、年輪解析から材積の計算を行い、持続可能な森林施業について理解を深めました。 今年は比較的おだやかな天気でしたが、寒波迫るなかでの実習となりました。 みなさん寒いなかおつかれさまでした。 （栗） Practice in wood science (http://fc-forecol.agr.shizuoka.ac.jp/wordpress/?p=2478&lang=en) was held in the Tenryu branch these two days. We conducted vegetation survey (DBH and tree height measurements) in cypress plantations and thinned out cypress trees. Thinned wood was used for making ladders and chopped for fuel. We also measured annual rings of cypress trees and estimated timber volume of plantations for understanding sustainable forest management. Kuri

浜松市立内野小学校の生物部4～6年生を対象に、呼吸の計測実験を行いました。呼吸の基礎と計測機械の使い方を教室で簡単に説明した後、外に出てみんなが呼吸していると思うものを集めてもらい、その呼吸速度を比較しました。 1週間前の下見では、校庭を見て、寒いし、こりゃ植物くらいしか集めるものはないなと高をくくっていました。ところが、みんな蛙やバッタ、カタツムリがいる穴場スポットを熟知しており、外へ出ると同時にダッシュでそこへ。植物の採取を想定して道具を用意したので、跳ねまくる動物たちの重さを測定したり、計測機器に入れるのが大変でした・・・（ちなみに、アマガエルは2gでした）。さすが生物部、甘く見ていました。 答えがわからない実験をして、結果の解釈について色々考える、こうした研究のおもしろさを少しでもわかってもらればと思います。 （飯尾） We held a visiting lecture "respiration" at Uchino primary school. Children collected various living things, such as frog, snails, leaves and fruits, from schoolyard and measured their respiration in rooms. It was very difficult to measure respiration of hopping frogs. We hope children have an interest in study and field research even for just a bit.

演習林ではありませんが、私が学生のころから新潟県苗場山のブナ林で研究を続けています。今年は、ブナの実が並から豊作で、こうした一斉結実が森林の構造に与える影響を調べています。（実をたくさんつけると、実に養分を取られて成長や葉の量が少なくなり、林内の環境が変わるのではないか？　という予想に基づいた研究です） 毎年のことですが、紅葉が綺麗でした！最後の写真は高さ24mまで登れるはしごです。 久しぶりの投稿でした。実習以外でも、気づいたことなど、紹介できたら　と思います。 （飯） Autumn leaf coloring at 550 m study site of Naeba beech forest. I am studying masting impact on forest structure and environment. Since this site is covered by heavy snow more than 6 m, I have to finish this year's study before snowing in late November.

今週は天竜ブランチで野生植物生態学特論 (http://fc-forecol.agr.shizuoka.ac.jp/wordpress/?p=619) が行われていました。この実習は、新潟大学自然科学研究科博士前期課程の学生向けに開講されており、今年は 5 名が参加しました。 天竜では飯尾先生が植物の生理生態に関する講義と実験を行いました。ヤマハンノキという木をまるまる 1 本伐倒し、5 層に分割、層別に光環境、器官別の重量、葉面積、光合成能力、呼吸速度の測定・計測を行いました。これらのデータから 1 本の木の炭素収支について知ることができます。 （栗） Advanced course in forest ecology (http://fc-forecol.agr.shizuoka.ac.jp/wordpress/?p=619) was held in the Tenryu branch this week. This course is for master students in Graduate School of Science and Technology, Niigata University. Dr. Iio gives lectures and instructions on experiments of plant ecophysiology. We cut down a Alnus hirsuta tree, divided it into 5 layers, and measured photoenvironment, weight of each organ (e.g., leaves, branches, & stems), leaf area index, photosynthesis capability, and respiration rates in each layer. By using these data, we can determine the carbon balance of a single tree. Kurihara

アップデートが遅くなってしまいましたが、国際フィールド実習 Field Seminar in Temperate Forests around Mt. Fuji が無事に終了しました。 後半は動物の採食行動や樹液流測定などの選択実習、天竜区でのジオツアー、人工林での森林リハビリテーション、暖温帯林（天竜）や富士山での森林観察が行われました。 台風接近により、南アルプスフィールドでの冷温帯林（太平洋側ブナ林）観察は中止になってしまいましたが、そのかわり、茶の都ミュージアムでお茶についての展示や茶道体験をじっくり楽しむことができました。 中国、インドネシア、マレーシア、スロベニア、タイ、ベトナム、日本の大学から参加してくれた 22 名のみなさま、ありがとうございました！ （栗） Field Seminar in Temperate Forests around Mt. Fuji finished last week. In the latter part of the lecture, we had selective practice such as "optimal foraging theory of forest mammals" and "stem sap flow measurements", had geo-tour in mountain ecosystem at Tenryu region, and learned forest rehabilitation in conifer plantation and forest ecosystem in warm-temperate forests (@Tenryu) and around Mt. Fuji. Unfortunately, we were unable to visit cool-temperate forests in the South Alps branch due to the typhoon, but we enjoyed exhibits of tea culture and tea ceremony experience in the Tea Museum, Shizuoka.
