Fuji(9/23~9/30)を行いました。
"Field seminar at temperate forests around Mt. Fuji" was held for students from ASEAN countries (Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam), from 23th to 30th September. The aim of this seminar is to learn vegetation structure and ecosystem function of Japanese temperate forests. Despite of the long seminar, the students were bright and cheerful from the beginning to the end, and thus we also really enjoyed this seminar.
Welcom party and lecture for photosythesis measurements was conducted at Shizuoka University on 24th September.
They visited flux site at Fujiyoshida on 25th Sep. Unfortunately it rained.
They visited the sea of trees in Aokigahara (25th Sep), and observed vegetation established on lava.
The students introduced forests of their country in night presentation at Asagiri dormitory (25th Sep).
They visited the fifth station of Mt. Fuji and observed vegetation at timber line (26th Sep).
They observed feeding damage of Abies forests by Sika deer (near Nishiusuzuka, 26th Sep).
Investigation of vegetation at South Alps field (they are checking tree species-name and are ploting relationship between number of tree species and plot area, 27th Sep).
They learned mechanisms of land slide at South Alps field where the soil is very fragile (27th Sep).
We observed huge land slide called Houkinagi, but it was very foggy and we could not see anything... (27th Sep).
We visited Hamanako Flower Park on 28th Sep and watched Japanese flowers and trees. Cluster-amaryllis were in full bloom.
We conducted pull-down experiment of Hinoki tree (Chamaecyparis obtusa) to evaluate torelance to strong wind (in Tenryu field on 29th Sep). Students install small flags to record movement of roots and soil during tree falling down, with video.
Preparation of pull-down experiment.
Because of the shallow root, Hinoki was easily pulled down.
We visited model forests of Quercus genus in Japan (29th Sep). The student who uses this forest for his graduation study is attaching column on stem to measure the respiration rate.
We observed gap experimental plots in Hinoki plantation in Tenryu field on 29th Sep. Various pattern of gap (e.g. one large gap and many small gaps, but total gap area is the same among the plots) was created and invasion process of native broad-leaf species was monitored over 7 years.
We observed secondary forest that is dominated by evergreen broad-leaf species, near the University's experimental forests (afternoon, 29th Sep). Originally this forest was Sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) plantation. However, Sugi did not grow well and consequently natural vegetation was established.
