南アルプスフィールドで、防鹿柵と木道を設置してきました。その様子を紹介します（2014/5/7～9）。 最近、シカによるササやウラジロモミ、キハダ、アブラチャンの食害がひどいので、200m分の防鹿柵を設置しました。 また、実習などで森林内を人が頻繁に歩くと、踏圧によって樹木の根が傷ついて樹木の生育に支障がでるため、木道を設置しました（まだ途中です）。少し狭いですが、実習や調査のときには、この場所を歩くようにしてくださいね。 South Alps Field (7-9th May) We have set up fence (having length of 200 m) to protect trees and dwarf bamboo (Sasa) from deer. Also, board-walk to protect trees' roots from tread pressure was constructed. Although width of the board-walk is a little narrow, please walk on boards when you attend our field lecture. 防鹿柵の設置　ササの多い場所はちょっと大変です Set up deer-fence in dense dwarf bamboo Walk-board and deer-fence 木道の支柱を、かけやで打ち込みます。この作業はとても筋力を必要としますが、よい運動になりました。 Very tough work,but good exercise for health 急な斜面では、木道が少し傾くため、滑り止めをつけます。写真ではわかりにくいですが、結構　斜面の急な場所です。 Installation of thin board to prevent slipping 地形によっては、橋のようになってしまうところも。 Walk-board set on steep slope

今日は、河川で行う実習の下見のため、天竜区の河川巡りをしました（天竜フィールド　5/2） Today, we visited many mountain stream near Tenryu field to select good points for field practice.

ミツバツツジ（Rhododendron dilatatum、写真1～3枚目）とアカヤシオ（Rhododendron pentaphyllum、4枚目）が見頃です（2014/4/23　南アルプスフィールド）。 活動報告： １新潟大学の佐渡ステーションの見学に行ってきました（施設とスタッフがかなり充実していました・・・）。 ２南アルプスフィールドは足場設置の準備が進んでいます（うまくいきますように）。 The flowers of Rhododendron dilatatum (first to third photo) and Rhododendron pentaphyllum (last photo) are at their best now (SouthAlps field).

例年、林道は3月末に開通するのですが、今年は記録的な大雪のために、今週にようやく開通しました。 南アルプスフィールドでは、林冠観察用の足場をリニューアルする予定です。足場の設置によって、樹木のてっぺんにアクセスして、普段地面から眺めている葉や枝、花、実などの様子を間近で観察できるようになります。今回は、その測量に行ってきました。 上木はまだ開葉していませんでしたが、アブラチャン（最初の写真）やアセビ（2、3番目の写真）がかわいい花をつけていました。ミツバツツジの花がとても鮮やかだったですが、残念ながら時間の都合で写真を撮れませんでした。 Introduction of pretty flowers of Lindera praecox (first photo) and Pieris japonica (second and third one) in South Alps field. We plan to set up two canopy access towers in this year. This time, we calculated positions of supports for the towers. These photos were taken in the interval of the calculations.

苗畑のブナが開葉しました（2014/4/11） いよいよ研究・実習シーズンの到来です。 Bud break of Fagus crenata in Tenryu field. Spring arrived. 前回の更新との間に 　新潟大学佐渡フィールドの研修（3/11～12） 　日本生態学会に参加　（広島国際会議場　3/14～18） 　日本森林学会に参加　（埼玉ソニックシティ　3/27～30） などの活動を行いました。

これまで内輪のみで行ってきましたが、今回は地域の方々や研究・教育等で交流のある機関の方々を招いて開催しました。儀式の後にフィールドの案内と紹介、意見交換、懇親会を行いました。参加者数20人以上の盛況な会となりました。懇親会では森林林業研究センターからご提供いただいたシカ肉の料理も振る舞われました。 今年もよろしくお願いいたします。 Ceremony offering paryers for saftey of Mountain works was held in Tenryu field on 31th Jan.

天竜フィールドの敷地にあるネズコ。紅葉といえば落葉樹がきれいですが、常緑針葉樹も緑と黄色のコントラストがキレイですよね？　内側にある葉は古くて光合成能力が低いうえに光もあまり来ません。常緑樹ではこうした効率の悪い葉から落としていくと考えられています。 'Thuja standishii' planted in the garden of Tenryu office. Speaking of autumn leaves, deciduous species are popular in Japan. But, contrast between yellow and green of needle leaves is also beautiful, right? You can see leaves in inner part of the canopy trun yellow. Inner leaves are generally old and thus photosynthetic rate is lower than outer ones. In addition, inner leaves are in dim light conditions. Consequently, shedding of inner leaves is efficient for them to grow.
