南アルプスブランチで見られる動物を紹介します（その 2）。 ［ネズミ］ 気象観測用のロガーボックス内で冬ごもりをしているのを見つけました。ネズミにとって寒い冬をしのぐには最適な場所かもしれませんが、ケーブル類をかじられて研究者は頭を抱えることも……。 ［ヒキガエル］ 春、雪解けとともに標高 500 mのあたりに大群衆が現れます。林道沿いに流れる雪解け水や雨水に一斉に産卵するため、林道上をカエルが占拠し、車で走行するのに一苦労というのが春の風物詩になっています。 （宇） Here are some pictures of the animals you can see at the South Alps Branch (Part 2). [field mice] I found them overwintering in a logger box of weather station. It may be a great place for mice to stave off the winter cold. However, they can also be a source of worry for researchers when they sometimes gnaw the cables in the logger box... [Japanese toads (Bufo japonicus)] In spring, as the snow melts, aggregation of the toads appears at an altitude of 500 m. Since they lay eggs in the snowmelt and rainwater that runs along the roads all at once, the frogs occupy the roads and it is so hard to drive there... Usami

南アルプスブランチで見られる動物を紹介します（その 1）。 ［サンショウウオ］ 林内の歩道保守作業中、堆積したリターの中から稀に現れます。標高約 500～600 m ほどの沢沿い地域で見かけます。 ［ウサギ］ 林道沿いにたたずんでいるのを見かけることがあります。 （宇） Here are some pictures of the animals you can see at the South Alps Branch (Part 1). 今年のブナは豊作？南アルプスブランチ中川根の林ではブナの雄花が道脇を敷き詰めています． 2015 年のスズタケの一斉枯死の影響で林床植生の被度が低下しており，防鹿柵も機能しているので，来年はブナの稚樹の発生定着が期待できるでしょうか？楽しみです． （水） Is this year a mast year for Japanese beech (Fagus crenata)? Fallen male flowers of the beech covered the forest floor like a carpet in the temperate forests of the South Alps Branch. I expect the seedling bank of the beech will be established next year, since the cover of the understory vegetation has been reduced due to the simultaneous death of Suzutake (Sasa borealis) in 2015 and the deer fence is functioning. 南アルプスブランチ中川根の森の優占種オオイタヤメイゲツ Acer shirasawanum の赤い花が咲きかけました． オオカメノキ Viburnum furcatum の白い花が咲いています．もう少し装飾花が多かったらよかったのに． クロモジ Lindera umbellata の黄色い花．天竜では3月頃の花です． （水） Red flowers of maples (Acer shirasawanum), a dominant species in the temperate forests in the South Alps Branch (Nakakawane), began flowering. White flowers of Viburnum furcatum are flowering. It would have been nice if there were more ornamental flowers... Yellow flowers of Lindera umbellate are flowering. 南アルプスブランチで、アカヤシオとイロハモミジが開花しました。 アカヤシオ Rhododendron pentaphylum はツツジ科ツツジ属で、東日本～近畿の冷温帯に分布します。南アルプスブランチでは、4月中旬～5月上旬にかけて開花します。周辺の山域にはアカヤシオ群落が多く、岩岳山などが有名です。四国や九州でみられるアケボノツツジの近縁種です。 イロハモミジ Acer palmatum はムクロジ科カエデ属で、秋の紅葉シーズンの代名詞的存在です。春に花をつけますが、直径は 5 mm ほどと、とても小さくあまり目立ちません。 （宇） Rhododendron pentaphylum and Acer palmatum trees are in bloom in the South Alps Branch. Rhododendron pentaphylum belongs to the family Ericaceae and is distributed in the cool temperate zone from eastern Japan to Kinki region. In the South Alps Branch, it blooms from mid-April to early May. There are many communities of Rhododendron pentaphylum in the surrounding mountains including Mt. Iwatake. Acer palmatum belongs to the family Sapindaceae and is representative of the autumn leaf season. It flowers in the spring. The flowers are very small and unremarkable (about 5 mm in diameter). Usami

一週間ほど前から，演習林事務所の二階の窓に接するように生えているハクウンボクに白い花が満開となっています．4月に赴任してから1か月半になろうとしていることに気がつかされました．コロナ問題で様々な自粛が余儀なくされ，演習林でも多くの実習も中止や延期となる例年とは異なる雰囲気の中でも，木々たちの生活は変わりなく進んでいることに勇気づけられます． （水） White flowers have been in full bloom on a tree (Styrax obassia) growing next to the Tenryu office for about a week. I noticed that it has been almost a month and a half since I started to work at the Tenryu office in April. I am encouraged by the fact that the life of the trees is going on as ever, even in the situation that self-restraint is unavoidable by the coronavirus problem and many field practices are cancelled or postponed in the experimental forest.
